A Message from Your ASTA President

Welcome to Alaska Science Teachers Association “cyberlounge.” ASTA is largely comprised of K-12 public school educators who are committed to the celebration and improvement of science education at every level and in every community.  Additionally, we are joined by university staff, professional scientists, private school teachers, village elders, and others. Just as we teach our students, technology both uses science and improves scientific endeavors, which results in rapid change in the way we discover, learn, and teach. Networking through ASTA can keep you in touch with this evolution.

The students we teach are exposed to information at a dizzying rate. Professionals in the science field are sharing information nearly as fast. It can be difficult to peruse it all in a meaningful way, and organizations like ours are a great way to preserve the human, practical element as well. As a member of ASTA, you will be part of a group that produces a state-focused newsletter, semi-annual mini-grant opportunities, a biannual professional conference, and enjoy the richness of sharing with teachers working in a wide variety of settings in Alaska.

The Executive Committee strives to maintain a dialogue between leadership and communities as well as professionals nationwide and specialists in our state Department of Education and Early Development. We want your input, great ideas, suggestions for vision and projects, and to hear of your needs.

Join us and contribute to this web site, our newsletter, and our wave of enthusiasm for STEM at every level.

Patty Brown
