A Message from Your ASTA President

Welcome to the Alaska Science Teachers Association Website!

The Alaska Science Teachers Association is comprised primarily of K-12 educators dedicated to the advancement of science education. Over the past 10 years, we’ve seen tremendous change in the approach to science teaching, with instant information on the internet, advanced technology in the classroom and inquiry based lessons. In today’s classrooms, we are teaching the first generation that has lived their entire lives in the world of the Internet. As teachers in the information age, we are being asked to teach smarter and learn faster in order to help our students prepare for life in a rapidly changing world.

ASTA offers many opportunities for collaboration, dissemination of information, and teacher support. Without a doubt, by cooperating with fellow professionals we expedite reaching and teaching students of the “E-Age”.

Membership in this Association gives access to a quarterly e-newsletter with the latest on science curriculum, professional development and statewide news. In addition, ASTA offers financial support for innovative teaching ideas and / or travel assistance through our semi-annual minigrant program. Your membership helps us sponsor the Alaska Math and Science Conference every two years. The conference provides teachers opportunities to learn about exemplary science teaching methods, participate in successful hands-on science activities, make contacts with professionals associated with science-related agencies, learn more about our wonderful state on exciting field trips and review the latest in classroom resources offered by science vendors.

I encourage you to join the Alaska Science Teachers Association. If you are already a member of our professional organization, your contribution to our website with information about professional development opportunities, seminars or informative websites would be greatly appreciated. We would also love to include any science education related news that you have from your area in our newsletter.

As your President I welcome communicating with you at jetons2@alaska.net.

Sincerely,

Judith Onslow, ASTA President
